He has over 15 years experience in treating medical and surgical conditions of the anterior segment of the eye.  He has published, reviewed journals, lectured internationally and teaches at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. His other interests include cataract surgery including the implantation of spherical and toric intraocular lenses and as well, refractive surgical procedures which involve implantation of intraocular lenses and Visian implantable collamer lenses (ICL). His other surgical interests include pterygium excision and conjunctival autograft and the treatment of ocular surface neoplasia.

His surgery of corneal disease includes all methods of corneal transplantation including full thickness corneal transplantation, posterior lamellar corneal transplant (DSEK), that is selective transplantation of the corneal endothelium and Descemet’s membrane, and as well deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) for anterior surface disease.

Dr Apel is assisted in treating these conditions through the Eye Health Centre with the assistance of seven optometrists who also provide technical expertise in contact lens fitting and in particular complex contact lens fitting.  Also provided is a refractive assessment service, and an anterior segment assessment service including biometry and corneal topography and mapping.

A designated aviation medical examiner (DAME) for CASA, Dr Apel examines the ocular health for pilots and air traffic controllers.  He is a shareholder of the Queensland Eye Hospital, Queensland Laser Vision, and a Director of the Independent Ophthalmic Network (ION).
