Dr John Ambler graduated with honours from University of Sydney in 1981 and undertook ophthalmic training at Sydney Eye Hospital. He then undertook a retinal fellowship at The Lions Eye Institute of Western Australia and a 2 year retinal fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio, USA.
This was followed with 12 months as Associate Staff Specialist in Vitreoretinal Diseases and the Cleveland Clinic.
On his return to Australia, Dr Ambler was a Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology with the University of Queensland from 1991 to 1996.
He has authored or co-authored 18 research papers in the peer reviewed literature.
Dr Ambler is a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner.
His specialist interest away from medicine is the study of the French language and all things French.
