Dr Leslie M Manning
MB BS (QLD), FRACS, FRANZCO
Dr Les Manning graduated from the University of Queensland in 1971, followed by intern residency at the Mater Hospital, Brisbane. He served four years as a medical officer in the Royal Australian Navy, serving on board destroyer escort HMAS Parramatta, and Medical Officer in charge of  Australia’s submarine base HMAS Platypus, and Australia’s mine sweeper and patrol boat base HMAS Waterhen, Sydney. Subsequently, he undertook post-graduate specialist studies and training in General Surgery, including neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and ENT, rotating through all Brisbane major public hospitals, further followed by specialist Ophthalmic Surgery training at the Mater Hospital, RBH, and PAH,  with additional training under Prof Fred Hollows in Western Queensland, obtaining his Fellowship in 1980.
During his Ophthalmic training, Dr Manning developed a special interest in surgical research, and Vitreo-Retinal surgery which was largely experimental at the time, but which offered hope in the management of many untreatable blinding conditions. After completion of training, he was awarded the RANZCO travelling Fellowship, and undertook further overseas studies in this area with Prof Robert Machemer at Duke University North Carolina, and with Prof Steve Charles in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, both being world leaders in this new area of eye surgery.
On return to Australia, Dr Manning was instrumental in establishing Queensland’s first Vitreo-Retinal unit at the Mater Hospital, Brisbane, with equipment donated by the Lions, restoring vision to many hundreds of blind patients, and served as a Visiting Medical Officer in General Ophthalmic Surgery and Vitreo-Retinal surgery at the Mater Hospital for fifteen years. During this time, he held the position of Clinical Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of Queensland, and has published several professional journal articles relating to complex Vitreo-Retinal surgery. He has also actively contributed to his professional college as an examiner for the RANZCO Fellowship Examinations, and as Chairman of the Queensland Branch of the RANZCO, in addition to organising Queensland State Branch Scientific Meetings.
Dr Manning is in private practice at 225 Wickham Terrace, Brisbane, where he consults and subsequently treats all Vitreo-Retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, vitreous haemorrhage, diabetic retinopathy, and all intra-ocular conditions including complex cataracts and complications from previous cataract surgery. He performs surgery with the most advanced facilities at Queensland Eye Hospital and St. Andrews Hospital, Brisbane, and conducts a Vitreo-Retinal Clinic at Townsville on a regular monthly basis with surgery at the North Queensland Day Surgery Centre.
He maintains a very active interest in all new developments in the surgical and medical management of complex intra-ocular and Vitreo-Retinal disease, and regularly attends clinical meetings and post-graduate conferences in Australia as well as in leading centres overseas, both in USA and in Europe.
