Michael Forrest specialises in Cataract Surgery, Strabismus Surgery, and general Adult and Paediatric Ophthalmology. His practice is based at Northside Eye Specialists, at Nundah.
Michael Forrest graduated from the University of Queensland in 1994, and was awarded the Charles Ferdinand Marks & Elizabeth Gray Marks Prize and the Mayne Undergraduate Scholarship. He did the research for his Bachelor of Medical Science at the University of Bologna in Italy, and he speaks Italian. He trained as an Ophthalmologist at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, and at the PAH, RBH and RCH, Mater and Greenslopes in Queensland. He did further sub-specialty fellowship training for two years in the UK at the Gloucestershire Eye Unit (cataract surgery, glaucoma and strabismus surgery), and at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London (paediatric cataract and glaucoma surgery, strabismus surgery and paediatric neuro-ophthalmology).
In addition to his private practice at Northside Eye Specialists, Sandgate Road, Nundah, Dr Forrest is a Visiting Ophthalmologist at the Mater Hospitals and was Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology there from 2007 until 2011. He has been a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland since 2004, is involved in ophthalmology registrar training and medical student teaching, and optometry student and optometrist education. He has been a guest lecturer at several optometry conferences. He was a Graduate Medical Course Interviewer for 12 years. He has been a Director at Queensland Eye Hospital since 2009, and was Medical Director from 2009 to 2011.
Dr Forrest has a research interest in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a leading cause of blindness in newborns. He initiated, developed and oversees Australia’s first Telemedicine program for ROP screening. He regularly attends and presents at national and international conferences, and keeps up to date with the latest technological advances and surgical developments. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Association for Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and is a Designated Aviation Ophthalmologist for CASA.
